Home 9 Category: Organic Cotton

The Organic Cotton production represents in 2018-2019 less than 1%¹ of the Conventional Cotton production.

In 2018-2019, Fair Trade Organic Cotton (meaning taking into account not only environmental concerns but also social ones) represents:

  • 11,000 millions of tons²
  • 4.6 % of the organic fiber production
  • and 0.04% of the Conventional Cotton production.

We want to show you on this so nice Mona Lisa picture what represents 1% on it and what represents 0.04%.

Our first (You and Us) idea is: Wake up! We have a lot of work to do! In LPLF company, we choose to and do intervene in this tiny market.
It is utopian to think that it is easy to chase fabrics in this very very small area of the Cotton production playground.
Some big industrial players are evolving in it and taking their parts.
Adding some limiting factors could be possible, we are every day working on it but as a consequence raising unicorns could also be possible.

Organic means that from the seed to the harvest of the cotton flower, it has been grown without pesticides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
The producers use natural fertilizers and insecticides, which do not harm the surrounding ecosystems, do not deplete the soil and are not toxic to the workforce who works in the cotton fields. Organic cotton also saves water compared to conventional cotton.

In your opinion, what is the ratio between
the organic fiber production and the conventional fiber production?

The Organic Cotton production represents in 2018-2019
less than 1%¹ of the Conventional Cotton production.

2018/19 saw the second biggest harvest of organic cotton ever recorded

Organic standards apply to the cotton growing. The manufacturing process from seed cotton to the finished garment includes numerous passes.

How can we assure that these passes will not violate social and labour conditions?

Up to now, only one independent certification ensures that for the entire supply chain there is no breach on ecological but also social and labour conditions: the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

GOTS is an independent certification agency recognised worldwide for organic cotton. Product and brand labelling has to be paid. This standard stipulates requirements throughout the supply chain for both ecological and labour conditions in textile and apparel manufacturing using organically produced raw materials.

GOTS social criteria must be met by all processors, manufacturers and traders. They must have a social compliance management system, with defined elements in place to ensure that the social criteria are met.

Some of the social criteria are listed below:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • Freedom of association and collective bargaining
  • Child labour shall not be used
  • No discrimination is practised
  • Occupational health and safety (OHS)
  • No harassment and violence

WE ARE ONLY PROPOSING ORGANIC COTTON FABRICS WHOSE YARN IS CERTIFIED BY THE GOTS (GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD).
